What Does “Grass-Fed” Really Mean?

“Grass-fed” is one of the most common phrases customers see when shopping for beef.

It sounds simple. It sounds wholesome. It sounds like it should tell you everything you need to know.

But in reality, beef labels can still leave room for questions.

At Big Horn Mountain Farms, we believe customers deserve more than a trendy label. We believe you should know how the animal was raised, what it was finished on, and what kind of eating experience to expect when that beef reaches your table.

That is why we talk openly about our cattle, our pasture-raised practices, and our finishing options.

Why the Word “Grass-Fed” Can Be Confusing

The United States Department of Agriculture Food Safety and Inspection Service treats animal-raising claims, including “Grass Fed,” as voluntary labeling claims that must be supported and must not be false or misleading. These claims are reviewed based on the production information provided to support the label.

For customers, though, the bigger issue is often not the regulation itself. It is understanding what the label actually tells you.

A package may say “grass-fed,” but many customers also want to know:

  • Was the animal raised on pasture?

  • Was it finished on grass?

  • Was it finished with grain?

  • Was it raised in a feedlot?

  • What does that mean for flavor, tenderness, and marbling?

Those are the questions we want to answer clearly.

How Our Cattle Are Raised

At Big Horn Mountain Farms, our cattle live on pasture, grazing grasses and forages.

We believe that matters.

Pasture life is part of how we raise cattle, but we do not want to use “grass-fed” as a vague shortcut. Instead, we explain the full picture.

Our retail beef, including the cuts sold through our website, Honor Store, and local retail availability, is finished with non-GMO grain.

That finish is intentional.

We believe non-GMO grain finishing creates the best balance of flavor, marbling, tenderness, and consistency for the beef most customers want to bring home.

Why We Finish Retail Beef With Non-GMO Grain

Finishing matters because it affects the final eating experience.

Marbling, the small flecks of fat within the muscle, plays an important role in beef flavor, tenderness, and juiciness. University extension resources note that grain-fed beef typically has more marbling, while grass-fed beef is generally leaner with less overall fat and marbling.

That does not mean one is automatically better than the other.

It means they are different.

For many customers, non-GMO grain-finished beef offers the flavor and texture they are used to enjoying from high-quality steaks, roasts, and ground beef. It tends to be richer, more tender, and more forgiving when cooked.

That is why all of our retail cuts are non-GMO grain-finished.

What About 100% Grass-Fed Beef?

We also understand that some customers prefer 100% grass-fed beef.

For bulk beef customers, we can offer that choice.

If you reserve a whole, half, or quarter beef, you may request a 100% grass-fed option. This gives you more control over the beef going into your freezer.

It is important to know, though, that 100% grass-fed beef often tastes different than grain-finished beef. It is commonly leaner, with less marbling and a more distinct pasture-forward flavor. Some customers love that flavor. Others prefer the tenderness and richness of grain-finished beef.

That is why we believe in choice.
